Our Vineyards

Our approach to our vineyard is much the same as raising our children; provide a sustainable, healthy, nurturing environment and don’t interfere too much!

Chardonnay 12

Chardonnay 12 consistently produces fruit with elegant and fresh white nectarine flavour.  The short rows and small area has ensured a uniform block with all vines producing reliable quality fruit.

  • 2 Ha Chardonnay
  • Clone: Bernard 76
  • Number of rows – 36 rows
  • Number of vines – 3,473 vines
  • Planted in 2004
  • Row orientation – east west
  • Irrigation – drip
  • Frost protection sprinklers

Shiraz 7

Shiraz 7 is planted along our eastern boundary and the eastern section of the block consistently produces superior fruit.  The soils are shallower and the elevation slightly higher which helps maintain moderate vine vigour, with ideal balance between fruit and foliage.

  • 4.4 Ha Shiraz
  • Clone: BVRC30
  • Number of rows – 82 rows
  • Number of vines – 7,584 vines
  • Planted in 2001
  • Row orientation – north south
  • Irrigation – drip
  • Frost protection 3 blade fan

Cabernet 4

Cabernet 4 has a section with 32 short rows planted on terra rossa soil, which has consistently produced full flavoured fruit. This is the area we selectively harvest for Eight at the Gate wines. Over recent years we have modified our pruning practices to revert to cane pruning in order to ensure consistency between seasons and to stabilise our production levels.

  • 5 Ha Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Clone: LC14
  • Number of rows – 77 rows
  • Number of vines – 11,563 vines
  • Planted in 1995
  • Row orientation – north south
  • Irrigation – drip
  • Frost protection 4 blade fan

About the Region

No longer one of the wine industry’s best-kept secrets, the unique characteristics of Wrattonbully fruit are gaining worldwide attention as the region toasts a growing list of trophies, medals and international accolades.

Where are we?

We are in southern Wrattonbully, in South Australia, midway on the inland route between Melbourne and Adelaide, on elevated tablelands, somewhat off the beaten track where we can focus on the business of growing premium wine grapes without distraction.
